Is my ebike eligible for insurance

February 24, 2026

To be insured, your ebike must be legal in the UK

We cover most types of electric bikes, including:

  • Electric mountain bikes (eMTB)
  • Electric road bikes
  • Electric cargo bikes
  • Electric hybrid bikes
  • Brompton Electric bikes
  • Bikes fitted with approved conversion kits

What makes an e-bike legal in the UK?

To be insured by Bikmo, your e-bike must be legal to ride on UK roads without vehicle tax, insurance as a motor vehicle, or a driving licence. This means it must meet UK Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations.

Your e-bike must:

Be pedal assisted

The motor should only provide assistance when you are pedalling. It must not power the bike independently.

Have a maximum motor power of 250 watts

The motor cannot exceed 250W continuous rated power.

Have a top speed of 25km/h (15.5mph)

Motor assistance must cut out when you reach 15.5mph. You can ride faster than this, but without motor support.

Not be “twist-and-go” (unless type approved)

E-bikes that operate using a throttle alone (like a motorbike) are not covered unless they have official UK Type Approval, meaning they’ve been certified for road use.

Be ridden by someone aged 14 or over

In the UK, riders must be at least 14 years old to legally use an e-bike.

Not sure if your e-bike meets these rules?

The UK Government provides detailed guidance on e-bike regulations in Great Britain if you’d like to check the rules.

You can also contact our team and we’ll be happy to confirm whether your e-bike is eligible for cover.
