You'll need a lock if you leave your bike unattended when 'away from home', and the lock has to be approved by Sold Secure - www.soldsecure.com.
Sold Secure is the premier testing and certification house for security products, and we use their ratings system as a minimum requirement for a lock used to secure a cycle.
Start by checking out our helpful video
Which Sold Secure rating do I need?
It's dependent on the 'as new' RRP replacement value of the bike, at the time of purchase, as to which lock rating you'll need:
Bike value up to £250 - Bronze Rating
Bike value £251- £1500 - Silver Rating
Bike value over £1500 - Gold Rating
A Diamond rated lock is fine too, as this is their highest rating available.
The rating is based on the amount of time and the tools required to try to break the lock, so it’s always worth buying the highest rating if it’s in your budget. The higher the rating, the longer it took, if it was actually possible to break! There's some great deals out there, and you can often get a Gold rated lock for the same price as a Silver.
Which style/type of lock do I need to use?
The most important thing is that it is of the correct rating for your bike's value and would allow you to lock your bike through the frame to an immovable object.
This is a requirement of the policy, so you must use a lock that is suitable. The style or type of lock you need to use is down to your own preference and dependent on which one is most convenient for you to carry and use.
If your Sold Secure approved U lock comes with an additional wire auxiliary cable, please be aware that the cable is not included in the approved rating, it's just the lock. This means that if you secured the bike through the frame to an immovable object, with the cable only, you wouldn't be covered!
How do I lock my MiRiDER 16 through the frame?
Folding bike frames can be a little different to the traditional 'triangular-tubed' bike frame. The MiRiDER 16's frame structure includes a wheel mount to protect the chainset when folded, and you can fit a standard U-lock through this.
If you're the lucky owner of a MiRiDER 16, check out how you can meet our locking requirements by watching the instructions in the following video:
How can I tell if my lock is Sold Secure approved?
Once a lock is tested and approved, it is added to the Sold Secure approved catalogue, which is located and downloadable from the Sold Secure website. In addition to this, most manufacturers will display the Sold Secure logo and rating on the lock packaging. |
