How to lock your bike

June 2, 2026

To make sure your bike is covered by your insurance, it must be locked correctly using the right type of lock. If your bike is stolen and these requirements haven’t been followed, we may not be able to pay your claim.

Which lock do I need?

The lock you need depends on when you bought your policy. We use Sold Secure ratings to determine the required level of protection.

Policies purchased on or after 01/07/2025

You must use a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated lock, regardless of the value of your bike.

Policies purchased before 01/07/2025

The required lock rating depends on the “as new” replacement value (RRP) of your bike:

  • Up to £250 – Bronze rated lock
  • £251 – £1,500 – Silver rated lock
Over £1,500 – Gold or Diamond rated lock

The key rules for locking your bike

Whenever you leave your bike unattended away from home, you must follow these rules:

Lock through the frame
The lock must pass through the main frame of the bike.

Secure it to an immovable object
Your bike must be locked to something solid that cannot be lifted, moved, or undone.

Observe the 24-hour limit
Your bike should not normally be left unattended away from home for more than 24 hours.

When the 24-hour limit does not apply

The 24-hour limit does not apply if your bike is stored in:

  • A communal hallway inside the building where you live
  • A locked motor vehicle or locked caravan
  • A securely gated residents’ car park at your home address
  • Dedicated cycle parking
  • A private area immediately next to or within your home that is not accessible to the general public.

Locking your bike at home

Different rules apply depending on where the bike is stored.

Inside your home
Your home must be locked, but the bike does not need to be locked to an immovable object. If a theft occurs, there must be evidence of forcible and violent entry, such as a broken door or window.

Shed, garage or outbuilding
The shed or garage must be locked and only accessible to people living in your household. If the building is locked, the bike does not need to be secured to an immovable object inside.

Communal areas
If your bike is stored in a shared hallway or car park, it must be locked through the frame to an immovable object using an approved lock.

Bike hangars
Your bike must be locked through the frame to the internal bars or racks using an approved lock.

Important things to remember

Cables
If your lock includes a thin cable accessory, the cable is not considered part of the approved lock rating.

Keep proof of your lock
Keep your lock purchase receipt and details of the lock. If you make a claim, we may ask for lock information and a photo of your keys.

Accessories
Accessories such as lights or tools are covered if they are stolen at the same time as the bike or taken from your locked home.

How do I lock my MiRiDER through the frame?

Folding bike frames can be a little different to the traditional 'triangular-tubed' bike frame. The MiRiDER 20 has an easily removable seatpost. Various locks will fit through the frame tube when the seatpost is removed, as shown in the two examples below. This allows the MiRiDER 20 to be locked through the frame to an immovable object.

The MiRiDER 16's frame structure includes a wheel mount to protect the chainset when folded, and you can fit a standard U-lock through this.If you're the lucky owner of a MiRiDER 16, check out how you can meet our locking requirements by watching the instructions in the following video:
