How should I lock my bike when I am away from home?

June 2, 2026

Keeping your bike secure when you’re out and about is important for both protecting your bike and making sure your insurance cover remains valid. Please follow the requirements below when leaving your bike unattended.

1. Use an Approved Lock

For policies purchased on or after 01/07/2025

You must use a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated lock, regardless of the value of your bike.

For policies purchased before 01/07/2025
The required lock rating depends on your bike’s “as new” replacement value:

  • Up to £250 – Sold Secure Bronze
  • £251 – £1,500 – Sold Secure Silver
  • Over £1,500 – Sold Secure Gold or Diamond

Important:
If your lock includes an additional cable, the cable is not part of the Sold Secure rating. Locking your bike using the cable alone does not meet policy requirements.

2. Lock your bike to an immovable object

When away from home, your bike must be locked through the frame to an immovable object.

An immovable object is defined as:

  • A solid object fixed into concrete, stone, metal or brick that cannot be lifted over or undone.
  • An official bike rack at a railway station designed for securing bikes.
  • A securely mounted motor vehicle bike rack or roof rack.

3. Observe Time Limits

To remain covered for theft away from home, your bike must not be left unattended for more than 24 hours.

4. Alternative scenarios

There are a few situations where slightly different rules apply.

Personal supervision
Your bike is covered for theft while it is under your personal supervision, and it does not need to be locked.

Organised events
If you are taking part in an organised cycling event, duathlon or triathlon, your bike is covered when stored in the official transition area.

Inside a vehicle
Your bike is covered when left inside a locked motor vehicle or caravan, and the 24-hour time limit does not apply.

Public transport
If your bike is in the custody of an airline, train or sea operator, it is covered for up to 24 hours.

5. Keep proof of ownership

If you need to make a claim, you’ll need to provide evidence of ownership for both your bike and your approved lock.

We recommend that you:

  • Keep your original purchase receipts.
  • Take photos of your lock and keys.
  • Add your bike and lock to your Bikmo Kit List for safe keeping.

Following these steps helps keep your bike secure and ensures your cover remains valid while you’re away from home.

6. How do I lock my MiRiDER through the frame?

Folding bike frames can be a little different to the traditional 'triangular-tubed' bike frame. The MiRiDER 20 has an easily removable seatpost. Various locks will fit through the frame tube when the seatpost is removed, as shown in the two examples below. This allows the MiRiDER 20 to be locked through the frame to an immovable object.

The MiRiDER 16's frame structure includes a wheel mount to protect the chainset when folded, and you can fit a standard U-lock through this.If you're the lucky owner of a MiRiDER 16, check out how you can meet our locking requirements by watching the instructions in the following video:
