Is my bike covered if it is kept inside my garage?

March 9, 2026

Yes - your bike is covered when stored in a garage at your home address, provided the garage meets the structural and security requirements set out in your Bikmo policy.

When is a garage considered part of your home?

Your garage will be treated as home if it meets all of the following:

  • Structure: It has four secure walls and a roof.
  • Location: It is within the boundaries of your private residence.
  • Access: It is only accessible by residents of your home.

If these conditions are met, it qualifies as a lockable private garage under your policy.

Security requirements for garage storage

When your bike is stored inside a locked garage at your home address, the primary requirement for theft coverage is the security of the building itself.

Forcible and Violent Entry

For theft to be covered:

  • The garage must be locked and secured.
  • There must be evidence of forcible and violent entry or exit.

This usually means visible damage to the building at the point of entry or exit (for example, a forced or broken door or window).

When an Approved Lock is Required

You must use an approved lock to secure your bike to an immovable object if the main garage security requirements cannot be met.

This also applies if your bike is stored in:

  • A communal garage, or
  • A gated residents’ car park.

In these locations, locking your bike through the frame to an immovable object with an approved lock is required to maintain cover.

Your responsibilities

No matter where your bike is stored, you must:

  • Take reasonable care to prevent accidents and protect your insured property.
  • Maintain your bike and security measures in good working order.
  • Provide proof of ownership, such as the original purchase receipt showing the date, price & bike details.

What is Not Covered?

Theft from your garage may not be covered if:

  • There is no evidence of forcible and violent entry.
  • Security measures were not in use (for example, the garage was unlocked).
  • The loss is unexplained.

If you’re unsure whether your storage setup meets the requirements, it’s always best to check your policy wording or contact our support team.
